The theme of the latest edition of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue is same as it ever was, with Kate Upton doing the honors for the third time since 2012.
Upton joins Christie Brinkley, Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum as the only women to score a cover three-peat. In two of this year’s three covers, Upton is topless, rendering the issue moot for people who might simply be looking to sport the latest in swimwear this summer.0
Possibly the happiest person about Upton’s three-peat is her fiance, Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander.

Upton, who first appeared in the magazine in 2011, was just revealed as the cover after what the New York Post reports was a bit of drama. “Kate demanded that if she did the shoot, that she absolutely must get the cover,” an unnamed source said. “She also had a list of photographers and hair and makeup people she would only work with.”
Why wouldn’t she? Clearly, the results of speak for themselves.

This issue also features a bevy of athletes, including Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, Eugenie Bouchard, Simone Biles and Aly Raisman.
Perhaps most inspirational, though, is the appearance of Brinkley, now 63 and rocking a red bikini. Putting on a swimsuit for photographers was humbling and empowering for the former supermodel, who leapt at the opportunity to pose with her two daughters.
“In a country that’s very ageist, people love to put you in little boxes,” she said. “Women feel very limited by their numbers. On a personal level, I thought, if I can pull this off, I think it will help redefine those numbers and remove some of the fear of aging.”
